A new peer-reviewed and published research study has shown a natural solution for people suffering from recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). The open pilot registry study established that natural super-antioxidant Pycnogenol® can reduce the number of UTI episodes and decrease oxidative stress in individuals with interstitial cystitis (IC).
Recurrent UTIs result from bacterial infections. Statistics show that about 50% of women and 12% of men globally contract at least one UTI in their lifetime. Additionally, 25%-30% of women have at least one episode of recurring urinary tract infections. These conditions cause up to 10 million healthcare visits a year. On the other hand, IC is a painful, often chronic bladder disorder usually indicated by sensory severe lower urinary tract symptoms and pelvic pain but without bacterial occurrence in urinalysis. The condition affects 3%-6% of adult women. “Patients who suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections often experience painful, disruptive symptoms including pain, burning and itching in the pelvic area, and a constant need to go to the bathroom,” said Dr Steven Lamm, Medical Director of the NYU Langone Preston Robert Tisch Center for Men’s Health, a leading expert on sexual health. “Typical treatment administered with antibiotics can have noticeable side effects. Many who suffer from this condition turn to cranberry extract. However, science has not established a standard regimen or potency. This study is specific to Pycnogenol®, and the results – overall and in comparison, to cranberry extract – were measurable,” he added.
