Study Shows SOLUGEL® Collagen Peptides Reduce Joint Pain in Active Middle-Aged Adults

A clinical study evaluating joint pain in physically active middle-aged individuals has determined that consuming SOLUGEL® collagen peptides can cause a significant reduction of pain and discomfort. The unique research was conducted by Florida State University (FSU) and commissioned by PB Leiner.

Statistics show that 93% of people aged between 45 and 95 years old are concerned about muscle and joint pain, with two-thirds saying it has a moderate to severe impact on their health. This aspect can cause substantial discomfort during exercise and can limit the ability to conduct daily activities.

PB Leiner commissioned FSU to study whether SOLUGEL® collagen peptides could reduce joint pain among physically active middle-aged people. Study participants were aged between 45 and 65 and spent at least three hours each week undertaking activities such as hiking or cycling. Over six months, each subject consumed either a placebo or SOLUGEL® collagen peptides every day.

Subjects taking 10g per day of SOLUGEL® collagen peptides saw a 36% improvement as per the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, indicating a significant reduction in pain and improved knee functionality. Contrastingly, more than half of the participants in the placebo group had a decline in their scores.

Additionally, the study established that collagen peptides may improve the ability to undertake daily tasks such as commuting, cleaning, and shopping. A third of the subjects taking 10g SOLUGEL® collagen peptides daily had clinically meaningful progress in their scores while undertaking such activities, and none of the participants on placebo had any improvements.

Previous research has established that collagen can reduce pain in people with conditions such as osteoarthritis, stability problems, injured joints, and exercise-induced pain. However, the study is the first to prove collagen’s long-term impact on joint pain and everyday activities in the healthy and active middle-aged population. “This is the first and only study to examine the impact of collagen peptides on joint pain in this demographic group. The findings suggest they have protective as well as beneficial effects, supporting the growth and repair of connective tissue as well as reducing joint pain,” said Dr. Mike Ormsbee, Associate Director at FSU Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine and the lead clinical study researcher.

“We commissioned this research because such a huge number of fit and healthy middle-aged people suffer from joint pain – and the results show collagen peptides’ enormous potential to help this demographic. SOLUGEL® is a clinically proven solution that can not only support joint health but may contribute to the healthy functioning of your body, including muscle and connective tissue recovery and bone health,” explained Dr. Reyhan Nergiz Unal, Health & Nutrition Science Lead at PB Leiner.
