Eevia Health Oy Prepares to Meet Increased Elderberry Demand

Eevia Health Oy, a Finland-based producer of certified organic plant extracts, faces massive demand for popular elderberry extract, a sought-after immune-boosting ingredient.

The company has been in motion since 2017, and its goal is to develop bioactive compounds derived from plant sources located in the northern Finnish forests, above the Arctic Circle. Eevia Health Oy uses raw materials grown in the wild, such as Chaga mushrooms, pine bark, bilberries, lingonberries, and more. All plant extracts are organic certified and carefully selected from the wild in a sustainable manner.

Now, elderberries are facing increased worldwide popularity due to more and more information emerging on their health benefits. Elderberries grow all around Europe, but with this increased demand from the US market, Eevia Health Oy decided to answer the call, step up, and deliver Feno-Sambucus 14, a new elderberry product.

The company faces a huge challenge to meet such high demand, but company officials are confident they can acquire sufficient raw material to fulfill every order.

“We have spent years specializing with the arctic bilberries and more typical species in the north and look forward to adding our expertise to the robust elderberry market with the introduction of Feno-Sambucus 14. We extract for the same bioactive in elderberries, the anthocyanins, as we do in bilberries. It is, therefore, a very straight forward business for us to undertake this new product. We have demand for extracts from elderberry for several million euros, and we have temporarily accepted only a smaller fraction of these orders while we work to increase our production. We believe that the elderberry carries the potential to be another backbone to our business, joining the lingonberry, bilberry, and other berry extracts,” said Anna-Maija Vanhatalo, Sales Manager at Eevia Health Oy.

Elderberry has been used in traditional medicine, and research shows that this plant is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and other bioactive nutrients. A systematic review of elderberry and elderflower showed some promising effects:

  • Boosting the immune system
  • Helping gastrointestinal health
  • Improving weight management
  • Lowering blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health
  • Eliminating excess cholesterol and managing diabetes
  • Could help against cold and flu
  • Reducing the appearance of wrinkles

Keep in mind that these are the preliminary results and that separate studies must confirm each effect. Even though elderberry can help improve your health, it should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment.
